Aira: A Tool for the Visually Impaired
RWJBarnabas Health is committed to the wellbeing of all employees, patients, and visitors, including those who are blind or have low vision. To support a greater independence in the workplace, we offer remote visual interpretation at no cost – through the Aira app.
Using a smartphone camera and the free app, Aira connects users with a trained visual interpreter who can provide real-time guidance in any environment – whether navigating the workplace, reading documents, or accessing digital content. This service helps ensure that everyone has the support they need to thrive personally and professionally at RWJBarnabas Health.
Aira agents are not a replacement for a guide dog or cane, but rather serve as an additional source of visual information. Aira’s skilled agents are agile and can assist with a range of tasks one may encounter within RWJBarnabas Health’s facilities.
Accessing Aira:
Step 1: Download the Aira app (iOS App Store or Google Play) on your mobile phone.
Step 2: Launch the app and tap the button to be instantly connected to a trained visual interpreter known as an Aira agent. It’s simple and easy to use.
Once you open the Aira app, you will be connected to a call with an Aira agent. These visual interpreters are certified and undergo comprehensive Aira training to provide immediate information to callers to accomplish tasks as a team. Our Aira agents must pass a background check, sign a non-disclosure agreement, and complete extensive training on orientation and mobility.
By removing barriers to access and navigation, Aira enhances the emotional, physical, and professional wellbeing of our employees and reinforces our commitment to fostering a welcoming workplace for all.
