Prescription Drug Tiers

Prescription drugs generally fall into the following “tiers” and your out-of-pocket cost will vary by each of these tiers. Whenever possible, consider filling your prescription with a generic drug rather than a brand-name drug.

  • Generic Drugs: Medication that contains the same active ingredients and is available in the same strengths and dosages as its brand-name equivalent. Generic drugs cost less than brand-name drugs and save you money.
  • Preferred Brand Drugs: Medication that has been identified as a good value, both clinically and financially. You pay less for preferred brand-name drugs than for non-preferred brand-name drugs.
  • Non-Preferred Brand Drugs: Medication that has an alternative generic or preferred brand-name drug that is clinically equivalent. Non-preferred brand-name drugs typically cost more than generic and preferred brand-name drugs.
  • Specialty Drugs: High-cost medications used to treat complex, chronic conditions like cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis, and may be Preferred or Non-Preferred Specialty drugs. They often require special handling (such as refrigeration during shipping) and administration (such as injection or infusion). Specialty medications are limited to a 30-day supply at a time. All specialty medications must be filled through CVS Specialty®Pharmacy or RWJBarnabas Health Infusion & Specialty Pharmacy.

Filling Your Prescriptions

Retail (30-day) Medications:

Many prescriptions can be filled at any in-network retail pharmacy. Find an in-network pharmacy here.

RWJBarnabas Health Retail On-site Pharmacy:

Prescriptions can also be filled at an RWJBarnabas Health on-site retail pharmacy. On-site pharmacies are either managed by RWJBH or Walgreens and located at many of our facilities.

Click here for a list of our on-site retail pharmacies.

Maintenance (90-day) Medications:

Maintenance medications (i.e. long-term drugs such as those to treat high blood pressure or high cholesterol) must be filled through a CVS Caremark® Mail Service Pharmacy, CVS Pharmacy® near you, or an on-site pharmacy at an RWJBarnabas Health facility. After the second fill, if you do not begin utilizing CVS Caremark® Mail Service Pharmacy, filling at a CVS Pharmacy® near you, or one of our on-site pharmacies, you will be charged 100% of the cost of the drug at a retail pharmacy.

Specialty Medications:

Specialty medications are expensive drugs used to treat certain serious medical conditions. All specialty medications must be filled through CVS Specialty® Pharmacy or at a RWJBarnabas Health Infusion & Specialty Pharmacy.

For additional information about specialty prescription drug coverage, visit the CVS Specialty Pharmacy website.

Finding Your ID Card

You should have received a hard copy of the combined Medical & Pharmacy ID card in the mail in December. To access the digital version of the ID card, log in to the Aetna portal here or download the Aetna mobile app.  Note: You can also access a “prescription drug only” version of the ID card in the CVS Caremark portal or mobile app.

Below is a sample of the ID card (your specific card may note a different plan or network name, depending on which plan you enrolled in). Your member ID should have 10 total characters (including the “W” to start). The prescription drug information can be found on the back side of the ID card.
